Perkins Shirt | Ensemble Patterns

Long time no talk! I’m super loving my new Perkins Shirt by Ensemble Patterns and I wanted to share more details on it than can easily be done in an Instagram post. I also want to talk some more about the #sewcommonthread giveaway (at the bottom of this post)! If you haven’t heard about it yet, you definitely want to scroll down to get the details. Here goes!

I got this beautiful viscose fabric from Blackbird Fabrics for Christmas last year with no clear vision for what I wanted it to be. It was just beautiful fabric I couldn’t pass up on! Shortly after I decided I wanted it to be a Perkins Shirt, and finally six months later, that vision is now a reality. My handmade wardrobe is seriously lacking in woven short-sleeve tops, so I knew the Perkins shirt would fit the bill perfectly.

The pattern features so many options and beautiful versions on Instagram that I was able to narrow down the specific combination I wanted – regular length, gathered bodice, pointy collar, no pocket. The garment is constructed in such a way that there are no exposed seams, which makes me feel so accomplished after putting in all the extra effort!

As for sizing, I sewed up a straight size 4 and made no length modifications. I planned on being able to wear this top with high-waisted pants, so I figured that I could get away without any extra length. I can wear this with regular-rise pants as well, but for future versions I will probably add about 1-1.5″ to the length. My favorite styling of this top is with my mom jeans (pictured) and my new Pons sandals!

I am not a fast sewist by any means. Whenever someone gives a timeline of how quickly they sewed something up, I usually assume it will take me double the amount of time (that’s even if I have a chunk of uninterrupted sewing time). However, I was pretty surprised with how I was able to get this top done in small bits of time under a week! Overall, I’d say: 10/10, would recommend.

Now onto some super fun info regarding the Sew Common Thread Giveaway!

Several of us Houston Sewists (Allison, Danica, and Bianca) wanted to grow the Houston Sewing community. It was so great to meet in person and discuss sewing patterns and fit-issues and adjustments. As we began discussing plans to have monthly sewing meet-ups, we thought it would be so fun to have a giveaway and hear from other sewists about their real-life sewing communities, hence the Sew Common Thread Giveaway!

How To Enter:

  • Post pictures of you and your real-life sewing community and tell us what having them means to you and make sure you use the hashtag #sewcommonthread

You can post as many pictures using the hashtag as you want for more entries. We hope that this encourages you to go beyond the Instagram sewing community to build a real life sewing community!

And there are some amazing prizes….

Nine randomly chosen people will win one of the following

  1. Rosy Pena Patterns – PDF Pattern of choice
  2. Amy Nicole Studio – PDF Pattern of choice
  3. True Bias – PDF Pattern of choice
